Friends of Scapoose Public Library
The Friends of the Scappoose Public Library (FOSPL) is a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting our local library in a variety of ways. Our primary fundraising for the library is our popular book sales. All proceeds benefit the Scappoose library. The book sale events include a huge variety of books for adults, youth and children, plus board games, puzzles, CDs and DVDs. We hold several sales a year with all proceeds going toward the purchase of materials, books, special activities, librarian assistance and other needs as requested by the Scappoose Public Library.
If you would like to donate books, board games, puzzles, CDs or DVDs to the library, please take a look at the answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Yes. We take books in both hardback and softcovers. All genres, kids, young adult, fiction and nonfiction.
Jigsaw puzzles in good condition, CD's, DVD's, board games, book ends, and audio books.
We take books in good condition - no missing covers or pages, water damage, grimey or musty smelling outside covers and pages. Jigsaw puzzles should have all their pieces or list on front if a piece or two is missing. Please place a rubber band around the jigsaw puzzle box so it's not spilled in transit. Games should be complete or note what parts are missing.
No encyclopedia sets unless they're very old -- at least a hundred years old. No magazines. No books in bent, folded, or damaged condition. The exception is childrens books that may have a few marks on them but look otherwise in good condition. A good rule of thumb: If you wouldn't buy a book the way it looks, nobody else will either. Please recycle old, musty books.
The library staff will sort through your donation and keep the books they need for their collection. After that, the books are moved to the basement where the Friends of the Library staff will sort through them. They are either kept for sale to be used at our FOSPL Book Sales or passed on to other community resources that can use them.
If it's a small donation of a sack or two then bring them in anytime during library hours. If you have boxes of books please contact the library and describe how large of a donation (number of boxes) and general contents. The staff can set up a time if needed to help. Please don't drop off books on the sidewalk by the building or put them into the general library Return Bin outside.
There is a cart available to help carry several boxes at a time. Also, if there is plenty of staff working perhaps they will be able to help you unload. Call the library during regular business hours to arrange for help.
Yes, we are always in need of people who enjoy working with donated books. Please send us an email or stop by the library and leave your contact information with library staff.
The FOSPL volunteers sort through the donated books and place the keepers on appropriate shelves or into boxes. Each section of books is gone through as time allows to pull some older books and add in new stock. We also decide which genres to feature and make displays for the book sales. Sometimes, we take on larger jobs like moving whole sections of books around to make room for larger subject donations. We also need cashiers to work a two-hour shift during book sales on scheduled Saturdays. You will be trained ahead of time. The book sales involve working with the public, taking money, answering a few questions, and perhaps helping people find books they are looking to buy. We also do book scanning which is a gentle sit-down job. There are other miscellaneous jobs that depend on each person's experience and interest.
The schedule of upcoming sales is listed above in this page. You will also see signs around the Scappoose library listing the dates of the book sales. Call the library for any questions not answered here.
The sale is held in the basement of the Scappoose Public Library. We have both a stairway and elevator access to the basement. If you purchase a large number of books we can probably arrange help to get the books to your car.
The Friends support the library with funds to purchase computers, furniture, supplies, special projects' materials, the Dolly Parton reading program, the Summer Reading program, helping provide funding for the library staff when they are away at library educational programs and more. The library Director comes to us for funding for special requests that aren't covered by the library budget.
